To Tier or not to Tier. Machinations of Shadows

Scott here with my next article on Tiers.  This time we dive into Legion with eVayl’s Machinations of Shadows Tier 4, and is probably one of the best/most popular tiers that Legion players run.  I dabbled in Legion a few years ago back before I knew what I was doing…not that I know now but that’s besides the point.  I’d bought her, and even had her painted but never really gave her a shot.

Why play Vayl in tier rather than out?  Let’s break down the Tier benefits.

Tier 1- Taking the models allowed gives non-character solos in the army Advance Deployment.  Now this may not sound amazing, but it can be very helpful in allowing your Shepherds to keep up with your very speedy beasts.  Trust me, you’ll see why later. It’s simple, and needed.  It also happens to let your Spell Martyrs get in range so you can Icy Grip turn one.  Which is evil.

Tier 2- If you take the Spawning Vessel you get +1 to the starting roll of the game.  This is always a great benefit.  As Legion typically doesn’t care about the terrain on the table, so increase to the chance to go first the chance to go first is pretty decent bonus. This list wants to hit and run with Refuge and Admonition, so taking table space and maybe an early Icy Grip off means that the Vayl player can gain position on their opponent before tactically retreating while their Ravagores add extra fire. It also aids in their scenario game, allowing the Vayl player to dictate the terms of engagement.

Tier 3- If you have 3 or more warbeasts with flight they gain +2 speed for the first turn of the game.  Those Angels are going to be able to take a massive board space!  All the more reason to have those Advance Deployed Shepherds in place!  Going first lets you use up every inch of that movement.  If you’re forced to go second you’ll typically have to hold back so you don’t get charged the next turn. Speed 9 Angels are going to be running 18″!  Sweet baby Jesus that’s terrifying.

Tier 4- If you have 3 or more Heavy war beasts you reduce the cost of the heavy war beasts by 1.  Do I really need to go into why that is a good thing?  Point reductions are always killer.

Here is the list used by Mr Legion himself. JVM.

Who do you drop here against?

Her strongest matchups are Warmachine casters with lower armour because they die to the double Obliterate, something that is hard to stop her from pulling off..

Who do you pair her with?

EAbby, EThags, PVayl someone to handle ARM skew.

Thanks for reading.  Special shout out to Jeremy M for answering all my questions.  And even Frank, although I think I was interrupting his LoL game.  He did stop answering me at some point.
